UCLU's Environmental Priorities

Water fountain to be installed in new Union Building on Gower Street, to open April 2011!

UCLU is committed to environmentally sound practice throughout all of its services and operations. This is reflected within the UCLU Constitution under point 6 of the Union 'Objects'. This states that UCLU will implement ALL objects in a 'socially and environmentally responsible manner.'

UCLU Environmental Policy

UCLU has an comprehensive Environmental Policy that works to improve members awareness of the Environment, the sustainability of the Union (Socially and environmentally) and works to minimise UCLU's Environmental impact. Find the policy here.

This policy has currently lapsed and will be taken to the next Council meeting (18th January 2011) to renew the policy and bring it up to date.

On 23rd November 2010, UCLU Council passed a motion for the 'Sustainable Procurement of Food and Drink'.

The Policy ensures that UCLU uses as little packaging as is necessary when ordering food and drink. Where packaging is unavoidable, it should be recyclable and recycled.

You can find this policy here.

You can see the up to date 'Policy File' at the follwing address:

UCLU Environment & Ethics Forum

Come to Environment & Ethics Forum and have your say in Union policies and values. Also, if you're not happy with how and how the Union operates its services in these areas...come and tell us.

Watch the Union website as well as facebook to find out when the next meeting will be. Currently the next meeting is early January 2011.

For more information, feel free to get in contact with the UCLU Environment and Ethics Officer at uclu-environment.ethics.officer@ucl.ac.uk.

Green Impact Awards 2010/11

Lat year, UCLU achieved a Bronze Award in the NUSSL Sound Impact Awards 2009/10.

Currently, we are entered into the NUSSL Green Impact Awards 2010/11 where we hope to achieve a Silver Award. To see what criteria we must meet to achieve this award, click here.

As part of this, UCLU is also a member of the NUSSL E&E Opt-in Group. More information can be found here.

The E&E Opt-in Group includes within it, an Environmental Audit of Union buildings to ensure we are performing in an Environmental way. We expect our next Audit to be carried out in March 2011. Our current Audit results can be found here.

To start using the site, follow this link and enjoy!

UCLU Key Environmental Aspects and Impacts

UCLU has logged it's key environmental aspects and impacts during the day to day running of the Union and its services.

These aspects allow us to easily assess how we run our Union. The impacts have also been assessed so that we may understand how we effect the environment and how we can minimise our environmental impact.

To see our list of aspects and impacts, click here.

2009/10 UCLU Environmental Information

Minimising Waste at UCL Halls to deliver a large scale recycle and re-use scheme.

The following halls will have on-site collection facilities:
Ramsay Hall, Astor College, John Dodgson House, Langton Close and Ifor Evans Hall

Collections will take place once a week for 4 weeks beginning the week of 24 May. Specific information about collections will be coming shortly. In the meantime, if you have any specific questions, please contact .

Volunteers are still needed to help sort donated items and facilitate collection of packed items by CRISP members who will subsequently deliver these to charities. This will happen towards the end of May which means most of you will be finished with exams. In any case, you can commit to as little or as much time as you wish - keep in mind there will be lots of free stuff to grab! If you would like to help or get more details, please contact

Students for Ethical Investment Campaign Week is coming: please check out this page for all the details!

UCL Communications filmed this video to launch UCL's 10:10 campaign, which aims to cut 10% of our emissions in 2010. You can film your response to this video on youtube, and enter a competition for the best video (judged for artistic merit but more importantly for the strength of their sustainability idea).

Sustainable Development Policy

. This bans domestic flights on union business, states that we can buy more expensive services if they are more sustainable, requires us to buy biodegradable and recycled materials where possible, and much else. We'll be improving this policy in the near future, but its not a bad start.

--------------------------------------------------(the following updates are from the previous academic year)24/04/09 - Sustainable Development Committee

24/04/09 - New Recycle Bins arrived

New recycles bins have now arrived - you'll find more bottle and can bins, and a load of paper recycling bins. We've tried to put them in the key locations but if you feel that there is an area that could use a recycle bin (of either sort) that doesn't have one then let me know at cs.officer@ucl.ac.uk

20/03/09 - Green challenges

We now have Currently in the works are a series of Green Challenges posters, challenging you to do various things to help us keep our impact as low as possible.  So keep an eye out for them - and do what they say!

20/03/09 - More recycle bins on the way!

We are in the process of identifying areas which are in need of more bottle/can recycle bins, and areas which could use paper recycling.  As soon as we've done that we will be ordering a bunch more.

20/03/09 - Policy Passed

Apologies for the delay in this post, but we do have a sustainable development policy now and have done for the last month.  It passed with 16 votes to 14 with a couple of abstentions.  the ban on union funded domestic flights in particular proved to be controversial.  Various parts of it are now well on the way to implementation.
