Edwina Akerele has learned about the importance of volunteering and she some valuable life lessons.

Edwina is a medical student, and has been volunteering with the Teddy Bear Clinic, the VSU Party Decorations Team, and with a number of one-off events.

What's been the most rewarding thing that you've gained from your volunteering?
Knowing that giving just 5 minutes of my day can go such a long way - for example, planting a bulb that will bloom into a beautiful flower to decorate an elderly person’s shelf.

What’s the most fun thing you’ve done as a volunteer?

Definitely christmas decorations and building a christmas tree out of balloons for the Latin American Disabled People's project.

What’s the most challenging thing you’ve done as a volunteer and what did you learn from it?
Sacrificing time on a weekend to volunteer - I learnt that selflessness can go a long way, plus you’ll probably spend the time in a non-fulfilling way anyway!

How do you think it will help you with your future career?
As a doctor, there will be times when you need to go that extra mile and work outside your specified duties; volunteering helps you learn how to give up your time for someone else.
