London being a cosmopolitan city, is one of the most racially diverse city in the world. In London alone, over 300 languages were spoken. However, opportunities to learn a new foreign language in a classroom setting are not possible for many children. Many schools lack the resources to run after-school language clubs for children. This project therefore, is aimed at providing these children an opportunity to learn a new language in a fun and stimulating environment.
Throughout the year, we have coordinated language clubs (Italian, Spanish and Mandarin) in 3 local primary schools. Each week, our dedicated team of volunteers prepared fun and interactive activities for the children, including story-telling, exciting games, arts and crafts, sing-along activities etc. The kids truly enjoyed learning a new foreign language in this relaxed atmosphere, and some of them even claimed that this after-school club is something they most look forward to each week!
The highlight of the language clubs is unquestionably the end of term party that we throw for the children. Each of the volunteers had prepared some national delicacies, such as Chinese Dim Sums, thin and crispy pepperoni pizza or the mouth-watering tortilla de patatas. The kids had truly enjoyed the novel experience of tasting typical foreign dishes and of course enjoyed the feast we have prepared for them.
From the very beginning of the academic year, our volunteers tokk pride and full ownership in planning and leading the club throughout their volunteering experience. They were not only the leaders of the language clubs, but they were also the friendly big brothers and sisters, whom are passionate about sharing their mother tongue to a group of equally enthusiastic kids.
Looking back at the progress we have made in the Language Clubs, I realised how much it has been achieved. From drafting the project proposal, to seeking partnership with schools, managing a pool of volunteers, and actually volunteering in the language clubs, as project coordinator, I have definitely learnt a lot. It has allowed me to develop my interpersonal, leadership and management skills. Seeing the project running successfully, and hearing the positive feedback from the kids and the volunteers, it has been a most heartwarming experience as a project leader.
If you have a brilliant idea that you would like to execute and if you want to make a positive impact to the wider community, go for it and run your own voluntary project. No dreams are too small to dream of. I guarantee you, this will be a most worthwhile and gratifying experience you can experience in University. As the famous 20th century entrepreneur Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Go for it and put your dreams into action.
